Social media content for small business: a simple monthly guide

You do not need a big team to show up well on social media. You need a plan, a clear voice, and a routine you can keep. Here is a practical way to plan a month of content for your small business or nonprofit.

1. Start with one clear goal for the month

Before you write a single post, decide what you want this month to do for your business. More inquiries, more event signups, more donors, or simply staying visible are all good goals.

One goal keeps every post pointed in the same direction, so your audience knows what to do next.

2. Know who you are talking to

Picture the person you most want to reach. What problem are they trying to solve? What questions do they ask you most often?

Those questions are your best post ideas. Answering them builds trust because it shows you understand their situation.

3. Pick three or four content themes

Themes make planning easier and keep your feed from feeling random. A simple mix many small teams use:

  • Helpful tips that answer common questions
  • Behind the scenes, so people see the real team and work
  • Stories about your mission, your customers, or your community
  • Clear offers or invitations, so people know how to work with you

4. Plan the month before you post

Choose how often you can realistically post, then map your themes onto a calendar. A steady pace you can keep beats a burst of posts followed by silence.

Seeing the whole month at once also makes it easy to line posts up with launches, events, and holidays.

5. Write one core message, then adjust it for each platform

Start with the main idea of the post, then shape it to fit where it will be shared:

  • Facebook: friendly and conversational, with a clear question or next step
  • Instagram: a strong first line, a short caption, and a picture that carries the message
  • LinkedIn: practical insight and lessons learned, written for professionals

6. Keep your voice and brand consistent

Write down your tone, a few words that describe you, and phrases you like or avoid. Use the same colors, fonts, and logo on every graphic.

Consistency helps people recognize you in a busy feed and makes your business look established.

7. Review, share, and learn

Read each post once more before it goes out. After a few weeks, notice which posts get comments, shares, or messages, and plan more like them next month.
